#01 Utmost obsession

First post of the year, first post of this blog of mine. Happy 2015 everyone! (:

I shall dedicate this post to my love and my current #01 obsession and fuss, Iris the gorgeous Siberian Husky!

Well, strictly speaking, she's not mines exactly. She belongs to a friend's friend and all three of us stayed together during my two-month Summer exchange in Los Angeles last year (Gosh, is it last year already?! I know, we all have to get used to changing our year dates from '4' to '5').
So if you are interested to know. Here is my story of how I met Iris.

It all started when Darren's friend, Eddie kept pestering him to get a husky during our stay in LA. Of course, we all thought it was ridiculous. Who in their right minds would want to take care of a dog within such a short stay in the US?! But he was still pretty hung up on the idea. So one fine Monday morning when Darren and I were being bored university students and Eddie was away at his aunt's place in South Carolina for the week, we decided to go 'husky-shopping'. The husky puppies Darren found online that were up for sale were all sooo cute, we simply had to drive down and take a look. Trust me, we had no initial intention to get the puppy. I was not even a dog lover to begin with, having previous experiences with Darren's Schnauzer (She's smelly and spoilt to a fault ugh). The first place we went to was-yes, you guessed it- headed straight to the breeder that had Iris (previously known as Princess) and her sister, Angel.

Only about seven weeks old! It was love at first sight. They were shy at first but warmed up to us eventually. Iris and her sister were so adorable, but Iris took to me more because she just keeps wanting to cuddle and yes, bite me. (Affectionately and also, because she was teething). Darren liked Angel better because she had stunning blue eyes whilst Iris had one blue-eye and one brown-eye. Nevertheless, we both agreed their face masks are really gorgeous and they will be good, healthy breeds. After much playing and discussing about their eating habits and needs with both the breeder, and Eddie over the phone (Darren did most of the talking, I just played with the puppies hahah), we knew that we had to get one of them promptly if we really wanted to get a husky because they would soon be sold away.

However, we had some reservations because there were other husky puppies of different coat colours and possibly, different personalities. So, we had to look. The other puppies that we saw were adorable as well, but we knew we HAD to go back. We chose Iris over her sister because its important for owners and their pets to 'click'. Angel took a longer time to warm up to us and seemed to prefer to wander off alone, hence the decision. Darren was a bit reluctant though because he thought Angel with the stunning blue eyes looked more 'fierce' and hence, more gorgeous.

This photo was taken when she was still sleeping in the cardboard box we got from the breeder. She moved into a crate about more than a week later. And yup, thats my shirt I sacrificed because she likes the smell of it.

Taking care of a seven-week old husky was definitely not easy. The first week was really, really tough. She was still learning where to pee and poop, kept barking if we locked her up in the crate too long or left her alone, wakes up at bloody 7am in the morning AND wants to play when both of us were still sleepy, and kept wanting to bite everything. It got better when Eddie came back and we took alternate days to have her crate in our bedrooms at night.

And that was pretty much what took up most of my exchange trip. We did not get to travel much because of the puppy. I gave up Vegas even after my Summer session at UCLA ended, because we had to stay to take care of her while Eddie went to flight school. It was like being a parent. We were so exhausted, but happy at the same time because this husky was such a bundle of joy.

Therefore, you can say Darren and I are like godparents but aren't the owner because we used Eddie's money to get her. (To clear up some of the confusion my friends kept having on my Instagram!)

Now Iris is back in Singapore after about six months in the US (The boys stayed longer). She pants more often here due to the humid weather but we make sure she has a fan by her side. She prefers to sleep on the floor, because tiles are more cooling, and in an air-conditioned room. Also, huskies can adapt to warm weather because their fur coats will shed so to all ye Husky lovers, no worries about her not being able to survive the heat and humidity! She is healthy and happy! Although she is still scared of sudden, moving cars and can be very easily distracted when faced with a human crowd, she is highly sociable and doesnt bite! (Omgosh, I sound like I'm promoting her haha. Nope she's not for sale okay!)

Other information:

- Currently standing at 22 inches (measured wither down)

- Born on 1st May 2014 in Los Angeles, California. (To date: 8 months old)
- Her mummy is from Texas
- Has a long bushy tail hah (:

& Sometimes I wonder how's her sister, Angel doing. Even now, we often lament about not getting both. If only we had the money :( But aah well, Iris probably doesnt even remember her sisters (plus one brother who was sold prior to our arrival). We hope Angel is doing well.

And it just so happened that today is officially her 8th month! Happy 8th month birthday, my dear baby girl!

xx

Loves,
Nices
